Abstract

Congenital hypoplastic anemia is a rare disease occuring primarily in young infants and has the characteristic of isolated depression of erythropoiesis from bone marrow.
This report presented a case of congenital hypoplastic anemia in a 6 month-old male who had become pale since 2 month of age.
Transfusions were performed for seven times until when he has admitted to the hospital due to pallor and irritability.
On physical examination severe pallor, hepatosplenomegaly and a heart murmur were disclosed.
Laboratory findings revealed extremely low hemoglobin, hematocrit & reticulocyte count. Unlike these findings white blood cells & platelets were within normal limits in proportion
& number. The peripheral blood showed normocytic, normochromic anemia with mild degree of anisocytosis.
Bone marrow study revealed marked decrease in number of erythroid precursors. The myeloid-erythroid ratio was 500: 1.
Prednisolone were administered from the 4th hospital day & reticulocyte count has increased from 2 months later.
Here we have reported a case of congenital hypoplastic anemia with the review of previous literatures.
